The City of South Hutchinson Fire Department is located at 20 East Blanchard, South Hutchinson, in Reno County Kansas. Originally an all-volunteer organization, in 2014 we became a combination fire department. Two part-time personnel provide single company response coverage seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteer firefighters support the part-time staff for larger incidents. After hours, volunteer firefighters provide all department services.
The organization of the fire department consists of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, a Division Chief, and Captain. The remaining personnel are firefighters. The department is considered fully staffed at 25 volunteers.
The South Hutchinson Fire Department response district covers approximately 2.5 Square miles with a population of 2,539. We provide fire protection, hazardous materials response, wild land firefighting, and First Responder EMS services for the community. We also protect several major employers in Reno County that are located in South Hutchinson. Currently, our Insurance Service Office (ISO) Public Protection Class (PPC) rating is 4.
Externally, SHFD provides extrication and rescue services though Automatic Aid Agreements with Reno County Fire District #8. SHFD has an automatic response agreement with Hutchinson Fire Department providing ladder service on all structural fires in South Hutchinson. We are also partners in a larger mutual aid system with the City of Hutchinson, and eight other Reno County Fire Districts as well as parts of Kingman, Harvey, and Rice Counties.
Our annual call volume for 2017 was 418 responses.

The South Hutchinson Fire Department's Command Staff consists of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, a Division Chief, and a Fire Captain.
The Fire Chief is a part-time position and is appointed annually by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The Fire Chief assigns the other staff positions.
